Oreo update now rolling out to OnePlus 5T users

The OnePlus 5T may be the company’s latest device, but it is also the last to receive Oreo. The beta testing is complete and OxygenOS 5.0.2 is rolling out over the air.
The update brings a new design for Quick settings as well as new versions for some system apps. It squashes several bugs, the biggest fix being mitigation for Spectre-style attacks.

As for the system apps, the Launcher was bumped up to v2.2 (includes goodies like dark theme), the gallery to v2.0 (tabs and Maps integration), Weather to 1.9 and the File manager to 1.7.6.
This is an incremental update and only a small percentage of users will get it today. If all goes well, the rollout will expand in the next few days.

18:9 Ratio Sony Xperia Compact certified by the FCC

This could be interesting – a Sony Xperia Compact with a tall aspect ratio screen. This is just conjecture based on dimensions from an FCC certification, but the numbers are lining up beautifully.
The Xperia in question has a 5” screen (126mm) and measures 135.43 x 64.63 mm. For comparison, an Xperia XZ1 Compact is 129 x 64mm – same width, but shorter.
The FCC only gave the display diagonal, not its aspect ratio or sides. However, check out what happens when we compare a 4.6” 16:9 screen (like that of the XZ1 Compact) and a 5” 18:9 screen:
Would it be too optimistic to think this device will show up at the MWC? Perhaps, though this looks like fairly solid evidence that Sony is ready to leave the old-school 16:9 screen behind and embrace bezel-lessness.

OxygenOS Open Beta 3 for OnePlus 5T brings iPhone X-like gesture controls, removes Clipboard

Around a couple of weeks after the previous version went out to eager testers, OnePlus has today released the new Oxygen OS Open Beta 3 for the 5T.
This addresses the controversial findings revealed a few days ago regarding the Clipboard functionality. OnePlus' solution is to simply remove the Clipboard function, based on user feedback allegedly.
Interestingly, the Open Beta 3 packs new navigation gestures that are reminiscent of those employed by the iPhone X (but not 100% identical). You can turn these on by going into Settings and disabling the navigation bar.
Once you've done that, the Home button is replaced by a swipe up from the middle part of the bottom of the display. To go back you swipe up from the left or right part of the bottom, and if you want to invoke the multitasking screen you swipe up from the middle and hold.
A security patch that provides additional protection against the Spectre vulnerability is included too, along with general bug fixes and improvements. Only for India, a new feature auto-sorts SMS messages into categories.
The new build will arrive over-the-air if you've already running an Open Beta. If you want to step into the beta realm for the first time, then you need to read the flashing instructions here. Note that moving back to the official OTA path from the beta builds will require a full wipe of your data.

Android Oreo update hitting unlocked Huawei Mate 9 in US

The Huawei Mate 9 has started getting a new update in the US. Currently hitting GSM networks-compatible International unlocked units in the region (MHA-L29 and L09), it's major update that brings along Android Oreo.
The change-log for the update isn't yet available, although we assume all major Oreo goodies should be included. As is usually the case with OTA roll outs, it may take time for the update to hit your device, if not already.

Samsung Q4 report: strong high-end smartphone sales, decline in the low end

Samsung posted its Q4 report, showing $61.8 billion earnings and an operating profit of $11.49 billion. That's a 24% and 73% respective increase over last year's Q4.
The positive results are spearheaded by profitable display and semiconductor businesses as well as growing high-end smartphone sales. That higher demand for Samsung's top-tier smartphones was able to offset slowing lower-end phone sales, although Samsung needed to increase its marketing cost to promote said top-tier phones.
Samsung's display business was lifted in the final quarter of 2017 thanks to increased demand for high-end OLED panels.
The semiconductor business saw increased sales compared to 2016 mostly thanks to good memory chip sales.
Samsung expects the Galaxy S9 to sell even better than the Galaxy S8 did.

Nokia 3310 4G can make an LTE-powered a Wi-Fi hotspot

HMD unveiled its third version of the reborn Nokia 3310 – but this 4G model is an odd duck. It’s LTE connectivity is a boon and it has Wi-Fi, which can be used to create a hotspot to share the data connection with other devices.
It’s odd, however, because it runs YunOS, an incompatible fork of Android. Don’t expect to run anything but preloaded apps, though (there’s no mention of Yun’s app store). Probably for the best since it's working with 256MB of RAM and 512MB of storage, too little for even Android Go.
Anyway, the Nokia 3310 4G is a single SIM phone with VoLTE support. It will be available in China and supports TD-LTE, the possibility of an international version is up in the air.
The small battery (1,200mAh) promises 12 days of standby and up to 15 hours of talk time on 2G, but that quickly drops to 5 hours if you’re using VoLTE. The FM radio can play for up to 31 hours. The specs don't say how long the phone lasts when used as a hotspot.
The rest is pretty much the same as on the previous models – a 2.4” screen (240 x 320px), 2MP camera with LED flash and a microSD slot to expand the storage.
The Nokia 3310 4G will be available in China starting in late February, we don’t know the price yet.
A note about YunOS: while it’s a fork of Android, it tries to do what Firefox OS (and WebOS before that) attempted. It seems that native Android apps are supported, but compatibility for individual apps is another matter. YunOS focuses on apps built on web technologies and has a strong focus on cloud integration (e.g. it can sync data from your phone to your computer

Verizon drops plans to sell Huawei phones

According to people familiar with the matter, Verizon is no longer considering selling Huawei phones in the US following pressure from the US Government to avoid the Chinese handset maker.
The government is also pressing Verizon to end any collaboration with Huawei on standards for a 5G network. Huawei was pushing to be among the first to offer a 5G-capable phone.
The Trump administration even considered plans to nationalize the 5G Network to 'lock-out' Chinese equipment. These programs were vetoed on Monday by both parties.
Huawei's phones will continue to work on both Verizon's and AT&T's networks, but you will have to source the desired phone from third parties. Selling direct would have helped Huawei reach more US consumers.
Huawei or Verizon has yet to make an official statement.

You can now download the leaked Galaxy S9 wallpaper

The first purported press renders of the Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S9+ were leaked last week and while we have many thoughts about the new design, many were simply interested in getting their hands on the new Galaxy S9 wallpaper. The good news is that you can now download the Galaxy S9 wallpaper as it has been leaked online.

Download Galaxy S9 wallpaper

The purported press render was posted online by well known Twitter leakster @evleaks and he has now leaked the new Galaxy S9 wallpaper on Twitter. The full-size Galaxy S9 wallpaper is now available for download.
This is likely going to be the default wallpaper for the Galaxy S9. The handset will certainly come with several new wallpapers that you will be able to choose from.
Samsung is due to unveil the Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S9+ on February 25. That’s also when the company is going to confirm the price and release date for this handset. A recent report suggests that the handset will be released on March 16.
Given that we already know what to expect from the Galaxy S9, it’s unlikely that there will be any major surprises at Samsung’s launch event next month in Barcelona.

Samsung Galaxy J5 |2017| January 2018 update released

Samsung is now rolling out the Galaxy J5 (2017) January 2018 security update. The company detailed the security maintenance release earlier this month and it brings fixes for several critical vulnerabilities. The latest security patch for this handset is now being rolled out over-the-air.

Galaxy J5 (2017) January 2018 update

Samsung has already released the January 2018 security patch for several devices including but not limited to its flagship handsets like the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy Note 8. The J series handsets that have received the update so far include the Galaxy J3 (2017), the Galaxy J1 mini and the Galaxy J7 Max.
It’s now the Galaxy J7 (2017)’s turn. Samsung is rolling out the firmware update for model number SM-J530F. The update has only been released in Poland right now but it’s only a matter of time before it goes live elsewhere.
The January 2018 security patch includes fixes for five critical vulnerabilities that were discovered in the Android operating system as well as fixes for several low, moderate and high-risk vulnerabilities. There are patches for 13 Vulnerabilities and Exposures (SVE) items found in Samsung’s software as well.

Finally last year Galaxy J7 (2016) gets new update with December patch

The Galaxy J7 (2016) gets her first security patch since the update to Android 7.0 Nougat. It is the patch of the month of December.
The Galaxy J7 (2016) got the jump to October 7.0 in October . Since then it has been quiet on the update front for the device, which gets a new security patch once a quarter. And now it is that time again.

Galaxy J7 (2016) December update

For the Dutch Galaxy J7 (2016) the update to firmware version J710FXXU4BQL3 is now ready for installation. This basically contains the security patch of the month of December , including a considerable amount of fixes from both Google and Samsung.
With this update it also becomes clear that Samsung is not yet ready to keep the J7 from 2016 up-to-date. That device appeared here in the summer of that year. Based on that, we therefore expect the security updates to continue until at least the next summer.

availabilty

The update is now available on the Dutch Galaxy J7 (2016). Because there are also a lot of imported copies of this device sold, it may happen that your device version does not get the update yet - or has received it earlier. If the update is ready for download, the phone will at least start automatically with it. Via  Settingsand  Software update you can also tap the Download updates manually option  to start the download process.
